Dine in Feng Shui Style

dining roomBy Lisa Jansusz

We entertain a fair amount. During my single days, I hosted regular “ladies nights” with appetizers (and wine!), but these days are more about sit down meals. We do host informal gatherings, but for the most part, our meals are eaten at the table.

Since the houses I’ve lived in did not have eat-in kitchens, we eat in our dining room. (Yes, 3x a day on the weekends.) Within the Feng Shui realm, this room is related to health and wealth, no matter where it’s located in your bagua. Health because it’s where you receive nutrients from eating, and wealth because if you had food for your family, you were considered wealthy.

So the question becomes; how is your dining room looking? If you think it needs some ramping up, here are some Feng Shui considerations.

  • Use it if you aren’t already. With eat-in kitchens, the dining room might be gathering dust. That is leaving a lot of unrealized opportunity. Energize the room by eating in it every once in a while – don’t wait for a special occasion.
  • Enhance it. I have an ever-changing centerpiece on our table that is switched out with the seasons, the holidays and just on a whim. Bring in fresh flowers or something you love (anything will do – statue, bowl, other accessory) that will give it a boost of feel-good energy.
  • Keep it ready. Dining rooms can become magnets for clutter (mail, boxes, office papers, etc.) if they aren’t used regularly. Even if it’s not a regularly-used room, you still need to keep a handle on what’s happening there.
  • Distract the eye from it if it’s near the front door. That can be a message about people eating and running or can contribute to weight gain (first message you get is food). Add some other “eye candy” to direct the eye away so it’s the first thing you see versus the dining room.
  • Change its purpose. Although we do like to see rooms used as they are intended, we also balance that with wanting rooms to be used. I know several people who converted their dining rooms to offices, play areas and libraries because they were used more.

Whether you entertain or not, remember that your dining room is still a reflection of what’s happening in your life. Make sure yours is sending your intended message.

Money Miracles Using Feng Shui

money in bagBy Carole Hyder

Whether it’s the economy, the way the stars are aligned, or a generally high-anxiety/high-stress time, a LOT of people are struggling with money. The majority of my advice these days has to do with how someone can improve their money situation.

Feng Shui offers a unique perspective that removes the focus from the problem itself and instead turns it toward ways of changing how you feel about the issue. So by making improvements in your space you will see improvements in your attitude and therefore improvements in the problem.

Here are three tips for making changes in your space that can jump-start an improvement in your money situation:

Tip #1:  Declutter. I know this seems to be the mantra of most Feng Shui consultants, but that should underscore how important it is. Since how you do one thing is how you do everything, taking care of your things will translate into taking care of your money.

Tip #2:  Use your proper entry. Your proper entry is your front door. It holds the symbolic importance of representing opportunities that may be knocking. If you don’t use it, it means you come into your space sideways or from the back. Use the front door as often as you can to make sure money can find its way in. If you already use your door (thumbs up) then enhance it in some way—-a beautiful welcome mat, a wreath on the door, a color you love, etc.

Tip #3:  Officiate in your office. In the majority of cases, the way you make your money comes from a place of business. If you’re not feeling as though you’re at your best when seated at your desk, get a high-back chair to lend support and authority. Keep those tall bookshelves from overwhelming you by keeping them in order and interspersing the books and folders with eye candy.

Making these small changes in your space can give you the energy and the clarity to find ways to bring in the abundance you want and deserve. If you feel rich, you will become so.

Revving Up Your New Year’s Resolutions with Feng Shui

loose changeBy Carole J. Hyder

Since Feng Shui is based on a direct relationship between your space and your life, you can enlist your space to help you with your New Year’s resolutions. By placing a symbol that represents your resolution, you will have a trigger that will remind you to stay on track. What you’re doing is making a change in your space to mirror a change you want in your life.

Here are some ideas for using your space to support your New Year’s resolutions:

  1. If your resolution involves earning more money, then place a covered container near the front door, in which each day you will deposit all your change. This container may be a decorative box or a piggy bank. It’s important that it be covered so that your resolution remains confidential as well as to prevent you or anyone else from easily grabbing some of the money on the way out the door, thereby diminishing your savings.
  2. If your resolution has to do with health, like working out more, or eating better, or losing weight, or getting to the bottom of a particular condition, then place a round bowl, ceramic or porcelain is best, in the kitchen. Fill it with fruit or nuts or leave it completely empty, symbolic of receiving a new perspective on health.
  3. When aspiring to new goals around your career, place a plant on your desk to represent growth in this area. Keep the plant watered and fertilized; if that’s a problem, use a beautiful artificial one.
  4. If your resolution is about improving your relationship, select a photo or memento from a happy time in that relationship, like a wedding picture, or a fun vacation taken together, or a photo taken on an anniversary. Place this photo somewhere in the bedroom where it will be obviously seen.

Keep in mind that if you let your outward symbol get kicked around, or pushed to the side, or left to die (like the plant), this will be an opportunity for you to look at how you really feel about making the change it represents. Your dedication to the care and upkeep of the object will tell you how sincere and serious you are about the upkeep of your resolution.

The Buck Stops Here: Feng Shui and Money

Money TreeOne of the questions clients most frequently ask me is how Feng Shui can help them acquire more money. Sometimes they desperately need it and sometimes they simply want a safety net. Either way, the perception is that they’re not where they should be in their financial world.

The first approach is to examine the various Wealth areas of their space (back left corners), along with their front door (inside and out) and the center of their home. All of these spots can contribute to or challenge their state of abundance. Getting these areas de-cluttered, repaired and enhanced with an appropriate Feng Shui adjustment is crucial to re-aligning the energy around money. This is a very conventional approach when Wealth is the concern.

That said, there are times when none of this works—–when, despite careful decisions about what to release, how to repair, and what to add, their money situation simply doesn’t change. They’re still struggling except now their belief in the power of Feng Shui has been shaken as well.

I’ve discovered that in these cases the issue isn’t Feng Shui, but rather it’s related to the client’s beliefs about money. The best de-cluttering job can’t override a deep yet misguided belief that money is still the root of all evil and will only bring problems. A client who carefully paints his front door a beautiful color yet all his life has only heard how he’s never going to amount to anything will not be able to have stellar results using Feng Shui. Hanging a beautiful piece of artwork in the Wealth area can only do so much if the client truly feels she doesn’t deserve anything, financial or otherwise.

Getting to the bottom of these self-sabotaging beliefs and transforming them into something more positive may take professional assistance. Feng Shui intention can still support this process.

Here are a few ways to enhance your money mindset:

  • To get clear about an issue (money sabotage in this case), do a corresponding clearing in your space. One action supports the other. Clear out those old beliefs as your clear out those old magazines/clothes/books/etc.
  • Keep track of the money you have—-in your purse, in your checking account, in the sofa. If you pay attention with intention, your money will expand.
  • Each day wake up with a grateful heart no matter what lies ahead. Gratitude is an alchemist that will change anything negative into something positive.
  • Watch how you physically handle your money. Don’t crumple it into a pocket or throw it in the bottom of your purse.  Treat it with value and respect.

So clear out old beliefs about money, let your space support your process by reflecting the visual value of clearing out, and let your heart support your process by expressing gratitude for what you have.  By opening up to the possibilities of abundance, the buck will stop with you.
